I am by the law of nature a Type A personality. Clean freak. OCD. A must have everything in its place person. It's a disease really. Inherited. My mom suffers. My dad suffers. Hence, they created the queen of all Type As. I don't say this proudly, but I do so with laughter. And most of my friends that are engineers are the same way. We are just wired differently. We were the little kids in kindergarten that always colored inside the lines, ever so carefully.
But this is where I KNOW God has a sense of humor. Not only did he bless us with a precious boy- we got one of the boys of all boys! He’s messy. Scratch that. That is a complete understatement. He’s a tiny tornado with a mission to search and destroy everything in his path. The quote I saw recently is him to a tee…he is “like a blender with the lid off.” EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. So God’s sense of humor was giving this mommy who loves her order in life a little boy who loves nothing more than disorder. I wouldn’t trade it for the world and I love him and his big messes too. One day those messes will be no longer and I will long for these days to be back.
He loves to paint, aka make a huge mess. He’s a normal child. He and I were painting bird houses for spring a couple of weeks ago. And as much as it pains me, I let him create his own little masterpiece without my constant instruction. He carefully and intentionally paints one blob on top of the other. Blending the colors all together. And as much as I wanted him to stay with one color, or not let the colors blend, I let him create his own little birdhouse.
Isn't this what God does with us as his children? He wants us so bad to stay within the lines, not blending our lives with things that are displeasing to Him. Yet, just like my son, we can’t help but make messes. We are tiny tornadoes of our own lives. But just like we extend grace and mercy to our children when they make messes, God does the same for us. He, if we allow him, will turn our mess of a life into a beautiful piece of artwork for Him. No matter what we’ve done, what storm we’ve been in, He can and will use it for His glory.
